Xbox live wifi troubleshooting

Step 9: Try to improve your wireless signal strength. Each time you try one of the following methods of improving your signal, you should recheck your Detailed network statistics to see if your signal strength was improved.

This will help you verify which solution s did the most to improve your signal, and will identify what factors interference, distance, range may have been causing your connection issues:.

Move your router or gateway off the floor and away from walls and metal objects such as metal file cabinets. Dense objects can interfere with the wireless signal. Move your Xbox console off the floor and away from walls and metal objects.

Remove your console from an enclosed entertainment centre, bookshelf, or TV stand. Shorten the distance between your console and your wireless router or gateway. Ideally, your network hardware should be near the centre of your home. Check for sources of active and passive wireless interference.

Interference can shorten the effective range of your wireless signal and can be a cause of random disconnections. Add a wireless repeater to extend your wireless network range. You can boost your signal strength by placing a wireless repeater halfway between your router or gateway and your console.

Add an external wireless bridge. If your wireless router is not near the console, an external wireless bridge can be used to receive the wireless signal so that you can connect the console through a wired connection to the bridge. Step Change your encryption type. There are currently three wireless network encryption types that are commonly used in home networks:. You can try changing the encryption method to see if that corrects the connection error. We recommend that you use WEP only as a last resort, because it is less secure than the other two methods.

The encryption that is configured on your Xbox console must match the encryption method that is used by your wireless network. For information about how to configure the settings on your Xbox console, see:. Step Disable wireless security. A wireless password helps keep your network secure. However, you may need to temporarily disable wireless security to determine the cause of your connection issue.

Important If this resolves your issue, you will want to try alternative encryption types. If all other encryption types fail, you will need to leave the router unsecured or you will have to update the router firmware if available to continue using this router. Note that leaving your router unsecured may put your network at risk and is not recommended.

If the connection test is successful , it means you had to completely disable the wireless security for your router to connect. Although your connection issue is resolved, your network is not safe and can be accessed by anyone. You may want to resolve this security issue with your network.

Some options to try include:. Check with your router manufacturer to see if there is a firmware update that you can try to install on your router. Try restoring your router to factory defaults. You may need to consult your device documentation or contact your router manufacturer for help with this. Buy a new router.

If the connection test is not successful , continue to the next step. Make sure that you re-enable your wireless security before you proceed. Step Try a wired connection to the router. To identify whether the issue is with the wireless signal from your router, try a wired connection to the router to see if that resolves your issue. The first step is to connect your console directly to your network hardware.

Plug one end of a network cable into a port on your router or gateway. You might need a long network cable, depending on the location of your router. Plug the other end of the network cable into the back of your console. If the connection test is NOT successful , continue to the next step. If the wired connection test is successful , then some unknown issue is causing your wireless connection problem. You may have a router that is incompatible with your console.

Routers that have older information stored in the firmware may not work correctly. Router manufacturers often provide updates that provide performance, stability, security, and connectivity improvements. Updating router firmware can resolve issues with slow performance or dropped connections. You can download these firmware updates and install them yourself. Your computer needs to be directly connected to the router using an Ethernet cable so you can upload the new firmware file directly to the router.

If the firmware update does not resolve the issue, the router may be incompatible with your console.
