He joined the research staff of the Wayne State University Bioengineering Center in and has conducted research in impact biomechanics and neurophysiology since that time.
Cavanaugh also serves as Orthopaedic Surgery Director of Research. In impact biomechanics, he has published papers on the effects of side impacts on the human shoulder, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis and the ability of padding to mitigate these injuries.
In addition, Dr. Cavanaugh has studied axonal injury, concussion, and the mechanical properties of shoulder ligaments. His laboratory has also studied mechanisms of low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, and axonal injury using neurophysiologic techniques.
Cavanaugh and the research team received the Kappa Delta Award of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons for low back pain research. Our Department has a long and rich tradition in surgery in all its facets, clinical service, research and education. Our residency is built on the tenets of traditional surgical training, but has positioned itself to take advantage of new technologies and methods for the continued evolution of surgical education to be on the leading edge of change.
Our goal is to have a surgical curriculum that gives our residents the tools and skills to practice surgery both at the forefront of change and as it is practiced today. Our surgical residents are positioned to excel in a career in general surgery or in fellowship training.
